Cardiac Services Expanded to
St. Catherine's Medical Center Campus
President and CEO of United Hospital System, Richard O. Schmidt, Jr., announced today the expansion of the services of the Michael E. DeBakey Heart Institute of Wisconsin at the St. Catherine’s Medical Center Campus.
Newly constructed, state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization/cardiac surgery suites will open at the St. Catherine’s Campus on January 12, 2004. The expansion is timed to mark the 11th anniversary of the first cardiac surgery procedure performed at the Michael E. DeBakey Heart Institute of Wisconsin. With the opening of the new suites, the same high quality cardiac services currently available at United’s Kenosha Campus will be available at the St. Catherine’s Campus to serve the needs of the growing western portion of the Kenosha community. The same experienced team of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, other physicians, nurses, technicians and support staff currently providing services at the Kenosha Campus will now also provide their services and expertise to patients presenting at the St. Catherine’s Campus.
"To have the opportunity to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the first cardiac surgery case performed in Kenosha at our Heart Institute with another “first” for our community makes this anniversary all the more indicative of the parallel growth of our hospital system and its capabilities and the growth of our community,” noted Schmidt. “Following in the footsteps of the pioneer of heart disease treatment and surgery, and the Chairman and founder of our Heart Institute, Dr. Michael DeBakey, the physicians and staff of the DeBakey Heart Institute are continually bringing the most advanced capabilities in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease to the people of our community,” added Schmidt.
United was the first and continues to be the only healthcare provider in the Kenosha community to provide rapid diagnosis and interruption of a heart attack through the use of primary angioplasty. Dr. Kevin Fullin, Medical Director and Chairman of Cardiac Services for United, explained, “The superiority of the catheterization lab approach to treatment of heart attacks compared to the use of blood thinners and transfer to remote facilities has been shown in multiple studies to always fair better in terms of outcomes and cost effectiveness.” Fullin also noted, “Primary angioplasty is the unequivocal evidence-based preferred method for treatment of heart attacks. With the expansion of cardiac services at the St. Catherine’s Campus, the outstanding benchmarks of low mortality and cost effectiveness that we have achieved in our program will now be readily available to the entirety of Kenosha County.”
