Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy at United Hospital System is supported by experienced licensed Occupational Therapists. The Department treats adults and children infants both as inpatients and outpatients.
Occupational Therapy Services
A wide variety of people benefit from occupational therapy, including those requiring prescribed therapy for:
- Work-related injuries including stress injuries;
- Splint fabrication;
- Limitations following a stroke or heart attack;
- Arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or other serious chronic conditions;
- Sensory training and sensory integration;
- Upper extremity range of motion and strengthening;
- Wounds;
- Developmental disabilities and learning problems; and
- Broken bones or other injuries from accidents.
Occupational therapy involves skilled treatment that helps individuals achieve independence in their lives. Occupational therapy gives people the “skills for the job of living” independent and satisfying lives. Services typically include:
- A prescribed treatment program and plan of care aimed at improving abilities to carry out the activities of daily living;
- Comprehensive evaluation of home and job environments and recommendations on necessary adaptation;
- Assessments and treatment for performance skills;
- Recommendations and training in the use of adaptive equipment; and
- Guidance to family members and caregivers.
Referral
A physician’s referral is required for occupational therapy. Occupational Therapy includes:
- Evaluation
- Plan of Care
- Treatment Program
- Home Program
Clinical Outcomes
United Hospital System utilizes a clinical outcomes program to measure efficacy of treatments and functional/therapeutic outcomes.
