Speech Language Pathology Therapy

The Department of Speech and Language Pathology at Rehab Center West is dedicated to improving quality of life and helping our patients return to their daily activities.  Working daily with United Hospital System patients while hospitalized, gives us the advantage of being familiar with the patient needs, families and short term goals.

The Department of Speech and Language Pathology provides a full range of evaluative, preventative and rehabilitative services to those with communicative, cognitive and swallowing disorders.

Services
The staff of United Hospital System’s Speech Pathology Department assesses and treats disorders that impair a person’s ability to speak or their ability to swallow.  The Department treats adults and children, both as inpatients and outpatients.

Common speech and language disorders:
Aphasia: A language impairment following injury to the brain.  It may affect comprehension, expression, reading and writing.
Dysarthria:  Slurred speech due to weakened oral  musculature.
Dysphonia:  Hoarse voice due to misuse of the vocal cords.
Dysfluency: Stuttering.
Dysphagia:  Difficulty swallowing.

Common medical conditions that cause speech, language or swallowing disorders:
CVA (Stroke)
TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury)
Alzheimer’s Disease
Parkinson’s Disease
Vocal Nodules
Laryngectomy
Tracheotomies
Head and Neck Cancer

Our Staff
Our program is staffed with Speech Pathologists certified by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).  All hold a Master’s Degree, a state license and a Certificate of Clinical Competence.  We are well trained in diagnostic and treatment techniques.

Making Life Easier
An individualized treatment plan focusing on re-establishing functional skills and reliable communication is implemented for each patient.  We strive to develop an individualized treatment plan that is appropriate for the patient’s age, treating all ages, from infants to seniors.

Referral
A physician’s referral is required for Speech and Language Pathology Therapy.

Clinical Outcomes
United Hospital System utilizes a clinical outcomes program to measure efficacy of treatments and functional/therapeutic outcomes.  This information allows physicians, payers and employers to compare our outcomes with national data norms.  Our mission is to provide clinical excellence and high quality service while managing the cost of therapy.
